Need of the Mechanical Seal?

Image
Mechanical seals were a remarkable step forward from the previously dominant technology deployed for the prevention of leakage. People utilised many methods to stop leakage before the invention of mechanical seals; such methods are listed below. Consider the diagram below, which represents the shaft and casing of pump ,where blue zone indicate Process fluid. Reducing the radial clearance between the shaft and the vessel wall is the apparent approach to reduce leakage . However, if the clearance is too small, the shaft might scrape against the vessel wall, making it impractical. People then employed a different strategy, positioning compressible material, such as rope, between the shft and the casing, as depicted below. This is also known as compressible packing; here, compressible material is positioned between the shaft and the vessel. Overheating and fast wear are the main causes of failures, due to which regular maintenance is required. Due to all this problem Mechanical seal inven

What is a Mechanical seal ?

We are all aware that the media used in pumps may be hazardous to humans, corrosive, valuable, etc., so it is very important to prevent leakage of the fluid. A Mechanical seal is a means to keep fluid confined in a vessel when a rotating shaft passes (Rotate) through a stationary housing or, very rarely, where the housing spins around the shaft. It is used to prevent media leaks, reduce friction between shaft and pump casing , boost efficiency , and guarantee the longevity of different pump parts. The design arrangement and materials of construction are essentially determined by the following factors:   Pressure Temperature Speed of the rotation  The product media One of the main causes of pump failure is mechanical seal failure. It is one of the most crucial parts of any hydraulic machine. The image and video that follows shows a pump with a failed mechanical seal.
