Need of the Mechanical Seal?
Mechanical seals were a remarkable step forward from the previously dominant technology deployed for the prevention of leakage. People utilised many methods to stop leakage before the invention of mechanical seals; such methods are listed below. Consider the diagram below, which represents the shaft and casing of pump ,where blue zone indicate Process fluid. Reducing the radial clearance between the shaft and the vessel wall is the apparent approach to reduce leakage . However, if the clearance is too small, the shaft might scrape against the vessel wall, making it impractical. People then employed a different strategy, positioning compressible material, such as rope, between the shft and the casing, as depicted below. This is also known as compressible packing; here, compressible material is positioned between the shaft and the vessel. Overheating and fast wear are the main causes of failures, due to which regular maintenance is required. Due to all this problem Mechanical seal inven
