Need of the Mechanical Seal?

  • Mechanical seals were a remarkable step forward from the previously dominant technology deployed for the prevention of leakage.
  • People utilised many methods to stop leakage before the invention of mechanical seals; such methods are listed below.
  • Consider the diagram below, which represents the shaft and casing of pump ,where blue zone indicate Process fluid.

  • Reducing the radial clearance between the shaft and the vessel wall is the apparent approach to reduce leakage . However, if the clearance is too small, the shaft might scrape against the vessel wall, making it impractical.
  • People then employed a different strategy, positioning compressible material, such as rope, between the shft and the casing, as depicted below.

  • This is also known as compressible packing; here, compressible material is positioned between the shaft and the vessel. Overheating and fast wear are the main causes of failures, due to which regular maintenance is required.
  • Due to all this problem Mechanical seal invention happend. Mechanical seal leakage is considerably smaller than compressible packing leakage. As a result, mechanical seals are employed on the majority of pumps in chemical plants, pipelines, and other industries.
