What is a Mechanical seal ?
- We are all aware that the media used in pumps may be hazardous to humans, corrosive, valuable, etc., so it is very important to prevent leakage of the fluid.
- A Mechanical seal is a means to keep fluid confined in a vessel when a rotating shaft passes (Rotate) through a stationary housing or, very rarely, where the housing spins around the shaft.
- It is used to prevent media leaks, reduce friction between shaft and pump casing , boost efficiency , and guarantee the longevity of different pump parts.
- The design arrangement and materials of construction are essentially determined by the following factors:
- Pressure
- Temperature
- Speed of the rotation
- The product media
- One of the main causes of pump failure is mechanical seal failure. It is one of the most crucial parts of any hydraulic machine. The image and video that follows shows a pump with a failed mechanical seal.

The necessity of mechanical seals will be explained in the next section.
